The Jubilee Sailing Trust (JST) is a globally-unique, UN-accredited not-for-profit which utilises the adventure of tall ship sailing to unlock human potential and break down barriers between people of different circumstances especially between people with physically disability and those without.
The JST has designed and built two special purpose tall ships (Lord Nelson and Tenacious) which include features not seen on other vessels so crew members with disability and those without can work together side-by-side. There are no passengers and no restrictions. In this way, a JST voyage provides a unique environment where disability is not a factor and those with disability can operate as equals, where everyone comes together to work as a single team.
This shared adventure and teamwork, in a structured environment, quickly breaks down barriers between people who may not have previously interacted and changes perceptions of what is humanly possible. The JST has received the rare honour of being accredited by the United Nations for the charity’s tireless work on disability and inclusion and support for the UN’s Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The JST is now part of an extremely select group of just 254 accredited charities and NGOs around the world. Since the early days, the JST has provided never-to-forget adventures to almost 45,000 people, including: 5,548 wheelchair users; 1,899 people who are blind; 547 amputees; 1,671 with cerebral palsy; and 1,295 with hearing impairment A voyage with the JST is about joining in and getting involved in all aspects of sailing the ship, regardless of your physical ability. Whether you are a tall ship enthusiast, fair-weather sailor or complete beginner - we welcome everyone. Don’t worry if you haven’t sailed before - most people step on board Tenacious with no experience of sailing a tall ship, so you won’t be alone! Our permanent crew will support you through all the tasks involved with sailing the ship.
Since its inception in 1978 the Jubilee Sailing Trust has strived to enable people of all physical abilities to sail. In the early 1990’s it was becoming clear that the mission was becoming increasingly popular. The Jubilee Sailing Trust’s ship Lord Nelson, commissioned and specifically designed for the trust, was unable to continue to supply the growing demand.
With this in mind Lindsey Neve, then director of the JST made it her aim to fundraise for the build of a new ship. A new committee was set up comprising six members of whom five were volunteers.
In July 1995, the National Lottery awarded the trust 65% of the estimated cost of such a large project. Initial funding secured, the project got fully underway.
After extensive research and negotiations, the new ship committee chose Merlin Quay, a site that included an old office block. The site was renamed Jubilee Yard.
Now funding was in place, Tony Castro’s design JST/02 which took over 2½ years to fully complete (and at one point involved 25 people working from four offices to complete all the drawings), could get underway.
On the 6th of June 1996 HRH The Duke of York hammered golden rivets into Siberian Larchwood during the “keel laying ceremony” and work could officially begin.
The timber frames used to construct the hull were first cut in Aug 1996, whilst work began on the old office block the JST acquired. The building was to be transformed into accommodation for volunteers who would stay for “Shorewatch” holidays and offices for the JST. During their stay volunteers of all physical abilities enjoyed helping the shipwrights in the construction of the ship.
Constructed upside down, the wooden hull was finally turned the right way up on the 23rd October 1998 in an extravagant ceremony with The Duke of York. The turning process involved fitting large circular turning clamps to the hull and took just over one hour.
With the hull the correct way up, fitting out the interior of the vessel could begin. Prefabricated sections were put in place, including the fixed bunks designed to be wider on the bottom bunk to enable wheelchair users easier access.
On Thursday the 3rd of February 2000 Tenacious was ready to leave the yard, and to a great many people it was an emotional day. Crowds gathered to get a glimpse of Tenacious as she saw daylight for the first time. Transporters drove the ship towards the barge which was to send Tenacious into her natural element. The following day tug boats took Tenacious to Vosper Thornycroft to have the masts and yards fitted.
On the 6th of April 2000 Tenacious was officially named in a ceremony attended by HRH The Duke of York.
Tenacious sailed on her maiden voyage 1,548 days after her keel was laid, on 1st September 2000 from Southampton to Southampton calling at Sark, St Helier and Weymouth. She has been delivering freedom, fun and adventure for everyone ever since.

This eight day voyage will see Tenacious explore the full delights of the waters around Melbourne before following the routes of the global seafarers through The Rip, passing Victoria’s other large natural harbour Western Port and on to Bass Strait. Depending on which way the wind is blowing we hope to voyage on towards King Island or the Furneaux Group, perhaps further East rounding the beautiful Wilson Promontory National Park toward the Gippsland lakes or it may be that we head West to see the Twelve Apostles and the imposing Shipwreck Coast.

Today the new Arthurs Seat Skylift project has a new name - The Arthurs Seat Eagle.
The first of the 24 new Gondolas was unveiled today at the brand launch.
Eagle CEO, Hans Brugman said today:
The new name symbolised the “soaring flight” people would experience on the gondola, and paid homage to the wedge-tailed eagles that could be spotted from the ride.
With the arrival of the Gondolas from Switzerland, the project is on track for its December 3 official opening.
The Eagle will be a boon for Tourism on the Mornington Peninsula. The new Gondolas will seat 8 people and will also accommodate wheelchair users with level entry.

Mayor Tom Tate today rolled out the first beach wheelchair mat in the city on a surf beach - promising a new era of accessibility for all.
To be trialled on Burleigh Beach on Saturday mornings, the beach mats allow wheelchairs to easily maneuver across sand.
The beach mat and two new beach wheelchairs, which are specially designed for beach use, have been donated by the City of Gold Coast as part of a $33,670 trial to run from September 2016 to May 2017.
Mayor Tate said the City was committed to ensuring everyone enjoyed a beach experience.
“The community asked for better access to our beaches and we listened,’’ he said.“If this trial is successful, we will look to provide beach access equipment at other locations.’’

The City will also donate two new beach wheelchairs to not-for-profit group Gold Coast Recreation and Sport Incorporated, for city-wide use at no charge.

“There has never been a more important time to ensure our city is accessible for all.’’
The Burleigh Heads Mowbray Park Surf Lifesaving Club will manage the trial, with equipment available on Saturdays from 9am to midday.
Burleigh Heads Mowbray Park Surf Lifesaving Club president Michael Boyce said his club was ready.
“Burleigh is a great location because of the easy connection between the surf club, carpark and amenities. Our patrol members will advise the public if the weather and surf conditions are suitable for the equipment on the day,” he said.
The beach wheelchair matting and beach wheelchairs join the Gold Coast’s growing number of accessible options, including viewing platforms along the Oceanway and permanent beach matting at Southport’s Broadwater Parklands.

Puffing Billy is Australia's favourite steam train and operates everyday except christmas day!

There are two designated disabled car spaces at Gate 3 at our Belgrave station in Old Monbulk Road. From there, access to the station platform is via a ramp (the bottom of the "zig zag path"). Wheelchair assisted persons should please note that this ramp is steep. If you require further assistance getting from here to the platform, please contact us on 9757 0700 or 9757 0721.
ACCESS TO THE STATION
Pathways to Belgrave, Lakeside and Gembrook stations are all wheelchair accessible.
To assist passengers with reduced mobility and to avoid our steep pathway entrance to Belgrave station, passengers may be dropped off at Gate 4 which is in front of our Belgrave station building in Old Monbulk Road. The area from the station to the platform is on one level.
GETTING ABOARD THE TRAIN
Our station platforms are not at the same height as our carriage doors, however ramps are available to provide easy wheelchair access on many of our Excursion Trains. Please see one of our friendly volunteers on the day of travel for assistance. The wheelchair ramp width is 75cm.

Toilets with wheelchair access are located at Belgrave, Lakeside and Gembrook stations.
Puffing Billy Railway welcomes visitors who use assistance dogs certified by a registered authority. Assistance dogs must be restrained by a harness or leash at all times.Please note that assistance dogs are the only dogs allowed aboard Puffing Billy Railway.
Companion card holders travels free of charge aboard the Excursion Trains. Companion card must be presented on day of travel.

Station Pier was originally known as Railway Pier and was first openedin 1854. It played a key role in Victoria's history and through the mid to late 1800's saw the arrival of the first visitors keen to seek their fortunes on the goldfields and then the settlers. It saw off the first contingent of Australian troops headed for the Boer War. In October 1914 16 ships left Station Pier for World War I. Again in 1940 troops headed for the European, African and Pacific theatres of World War II from Station Pier. Post the Second World War many thousands of the migrants that came to Australia's shores and gave Melbourne its rich multicultural diversity first set foot on Australian soil at Station Pier. The pier and its unique Gate House are heritage listed.
Today Station Pier is Melbourne's premier cruise ship terminal and is also host to the Spirit of Tasmania ferry service from Melbourne to Devonport. It also plays host to visiting naval and tall ships. Unlike many cruise ship terminals, Station Pier is not located within a freight terminal. The pier is constructed directly off the beach into Port Phillip Bay at the historic and cosmopolitan suburb of Port Melbourne, giving visitors stunning views from their ship and the chance to wander along the beach side board walks directly from the end of the pier.
Station Pier is 15 minutes from Melbourne's CBD.
The pier is open to the general public from 6am to 9pm daily (for pedestrians only). However, the pier is closed to the public during cruise ship visits, some naval ship visits and other exceptional circumstances.
During cruise ship visits entry to the pier is via the left side gate for initial security. The path down the pier is level and smooth with a road crossing about half way down to the cruise terminal. The cruise terminal is the second building on the pier and there is a set of elevators just past the main escalators. The terminal is on the first floor with a small cafe accessible toilets, and a gift shop prior to the main security checkpoint and gangway entry. The tidal movement in Port Phillip bay is only approximately 18 inches, gangway slope will alter greatly during your visit. Depending on the ship and gangway configuration assistance is on hand for wheelchair users.
Drop off and pick up procedures
From the main gate and security checkpoint it is approximately 500 metres to the cruise ship terminal. Drivers are permitted to drive onto the pier and drop passengers with a disability at the terminal building. On return the procedure is more complex. Passengers with a disability must arrange with the ships purser for a pick up at the terminal building. The passengers name will then be added to the security gate register. The driver of the pick up vehicle will need to quote that name to be allowed through the security checkpoint. As it is a pickup zone only prior arrangements will need to be made to contact the driver when the passenger has cleared customs and is ready to be picked up.
Please note: These arrangements must be made with the cruise line. Station Pier is not manned when there are no ships are in port.
Access to the City
There are two public transport options to the CBD. There is an accessible shuttle bus that operates on weekdays from the cruise terminal to the arts precinct in the city near the Flinders Street Station.
An accessible tram service (route 109) operates from the Beacon Cove terminus right into the centre of the centre with stops along Collins Street. Route 109 operates flat floor roll in trams from elevated tram platforms. Each platform has a 1 in 14 ramp at one end for wheelchair users. The accessible stops are:
The Tram terminus is a pleasant 10 minute walk/roll from the cruise terminal. On Cruise visiting days an accessible bus shuttle operates from the terminal to the Beacon Cove terminus.

Continuing the successful Trailrider program, Parks Victoria has introduced its newest power-assist model at Grant's Picnic Ground in the Dandenong Ranges National Park. All visitors to Dandenong Ranges National Park will now be able to enjoy trails in the park.
A modified version of a Canadian invention, the motorised TrailRider, was created by Parks Victoria and is the first of its kind in the world.
TrailRider all terrain wheelchairs are a cross between a rickshaw and a wheelchair and can handle more rugged bush trails where conventional wheelchairs cannot go.
The motor on the chair makes it easier to manoeuvre the chair over rough trail surfaces and makes it easier for visitors with mobility limitations to access steeper and longer trails than ever the before. The new model can be easily handled with two helpers to drive and balance the chair making it ideal for families or small groups of friends.
“Everyone has the right to enjoy the benefits of being in nature and we want to help everyone to be active in our parks. This is just one way we are making this possible,” said John Kenwright, Community Inclusion Coordinator, Parks Victoria. “The TrailRider really opens up park areas that people with limited mobility may never have been able to see or experience.”

The TrailRider has recently been trialled by a YMCA Recreation camp in the Dandenong Ranges for children with disabilities. Having a TrailRider based in the Dandenong Ranges will make it much easier for the YMCA , other organisations and individuals to regularly access a TrailRider chair to explore parks.
