Fusspots Inglewood
Antiques and collectables are a feature of Inglewood. Fusspots offers a good accessible experience. The shop is entered through a level double door. There is a bell on the outside of the store if the second door is not open.
Inside the store, the layout is good for allowing people using wheelchairs or mobility devices to browse the shop freely. The shop is well laid out and uncluttered which also makes it suitable for people who are blind or visually impaired.
Maldon Shire Gardens
The Maldon Shire Gardens are a peaceful and picturesque public gardens right in the centre of historic gold rush era village of Maldon.
The most accessible part of the gardens is at the rear, where there is a playground, picnic tables and a BBQ. The front section of the park is quite steep and the lawn area is inaccessible due to brick path edging. Best access is from the top of Fountain Street or from Francis Street. The is an accessible toilet available at the picnic shelter adjacent to Francis Street.
Victorian Goldfields Railway
Victorian Goldfields Railway is an authentic volunteer run steam railway linking historic gold mining towns of Castlemaine and Maldon in Central Victoria.
The station at Maldon has designated disabled parking adjacent to the station building. Level access is via the station gates to the left of the station building. The railway operates an accessible carriage that is capable of taking up to 12 wheelchairs on all trips. Like all rolling stock, the carriage is subject to periodic maintenance for advance booking is advisable. The carriage is equipped with ramps to allow access at Maldon and Castlemaine. Access to the station at Castlemaine is more difficult than Maldon. The train operates from platform 3 in Castlemaine. The access from the car park is via a long ramp at the end of platform one across the tracks and back up onto platform three. The gradients are 1:20 and the distance of approximately 300 metres.
There are good accessible toilets available at both Maldon and Castlemaine on the platforms. The are no toilets on the train and the journey time between Maldon and Castlemaine is approximately 45 minutes. A return journey is best undertaken from Maldon. It should be noted that there is no accessible transport available at Maldon Station to transfers passengers into the Maldon Township.
In addition to the accessible carriage, the train also has a carriage with individual booths. These booths would be ideal for people on the autism spectrum or families with members with autism.
The Bull and Mouth – Maryborough
The Bull and Mouth is located in the centre of the township.
Disability parking is available just across the road in Nolan St, or behind the building in Clarendon St.
There are two accessible entrances to the hotel. One into the main bistro area of High St and a second into the back of the bistro from the car park at the rear of the building of Clarendon St.
The bistro is well laid out giving a large selection of seating options for all group sizes. The counter has easy access and all meals are brought to the table. The menu caters for all dietary requirements. The bistro is linked to the lounge area by a short internal ramp with handrails. There are two accessible toilets. One is at the rear of the bistro and a second down the corridor opposite the lift at the top of the ramp.
Central Goldfields Art Gallery – Maryborough
The Art Gallery is housed in the old fire station in Neill Street. There is a designated disabled parking bay directly opposite the building. Entry is through a large front door. Entry from the street is level. Once inside there are two exhibition spaces. The larger space to the left has level access from the foyer.
To the right is a play area. A rear exhibition space is accessed via a ramp. A kitchen/meeting space is also available and is equipped with a portable ramp.
Golden County Motel and Caravan Park – Maryborough
The Golden County Motel is located on the outskirts of Maryborough, approx. 1.4 kilometres from the town centre. It has an accessible unit with a private concrete car park next to the unit allowing easy, direct access. It has a queen and single bed allow for a variety of configurations from families to a person with a disability and carer.
The bathroom consists of a separate shower and toilet area. The toilet has handrails on the side only. The room has good circulation space.
The shower is a full roll in with a small fixed fold down seat. The shower controls are hot and cold knob type within easy reach of the seat. The shower head is detachable on the long flexible hose.
Comments
The room is an older design that may not suit all people with a disability. The addition of a handrail at the rear of the toilet and a change of shower taps to a “cross” type with larger handles would cater for higher level disabilities.
